Fire Island is the large center island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long IslandNew York. Together, these two islands are approximately 31 miles (50 km) long and vary between 520 and 1,310 feet (160 and 400 m) wide. Fire Island is part of Suffolk County. It lies within the towns of BabylonIslip, and Brookhaven, containing two villages and a number of hamlets. All parts of the island not within village limits are part of Fire Island, which had a permanent population of 292 as of 2010 though that expands to thousands of residents and tourists during the summer months.

The unofficial capital of Fire Island, Ocean Beach is a 600-home community with the greatest concentration of bars, restaurants and stores on the entire island. Overflowing with small-town charm reminiscent of a simpler time, main street walks are lined with mom and pop markets and boutiques. Local children sell painted shell souvenirs out of red radio-flyer wagons. Just outside of town, Ocean Beach walkways are lined with traditional summer cottages that are both home to longtime Fire Island families and home away from home for many vacationers.

Getting to Ocean Beach is easy. You can get there by plane, car, taxi or train. You can fly into any of the major N.Y. airports and take a taxi or the train to Bay Shore Long Island. From the train station it's about a 20 to 40 minute walk to the Fire Island ferries or a quick taxi ride. From there it's just a short ferry ride to Ocean Beach. During the summer months Fire island is a strictly walkable island (meaning no vehicles on the island).
